Orthotic Fitter & Casting Technician – Job Description

Position Summary:

The Orthotic Fitter & Casting Technician is responsible for performing accurate casting, measuring, fitting, and delivery of prefabricated orthotic devices. This position ensures that all patients receive high-quality care, proper device function, and excellent education, while maintaining compliance with documentation, inventory, and clinic standards. The role supports clinicians, assists with evaluations, and ensures the smooth flow of the orthotics department.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Duties

• Perform accurate casts, molds, impressions, and scans as directed by clinicians.

• Measure, fit, and adjust prefabricated orthotic devices (AFOs, braces, diabetic inserts, compression garments, etc.).

• Ensure correct device selection based on physician prescriptions and clinical assessment.

• Educate patients thoroughly on:

• how to wear the device

• safety and skin checks

• cleaning and maintenance

• wear schedule

• Assist clinicians during evaluations, follow-ups, and fittings.

• Maintain patient comfort, safety, and communication throughout the appointment.

Documentation & Compliance

• Document all patient encounters in the EMR system (Nymbl/BFlow), including:

• measurements

• device delivered

• lot numbers

• patient education

• follow-up needs

• Obtain required signatures:

• verbal dispensing orders

• delivery tickets

• ABNs when needed

• Ensure that claims can be billed cleanly by providing accurate, complete notes.

• Follow all hygiene, infection-control, and clinical protocols.

Casting Room & Inventory Maintenance

• Maintain a clean, organized casting room and workspace.

• Label and store casts properly for fabrication or shipping.

• Track and maintain inventory of casting supplies and prefabricated orthoses.

• Notify management when supplies reach threshold levels—never wait until zero.

• Assist with stockroom organization, counting, and restocking.

Team Support & Clinic Operations

• Communicate effectively with clinicians, front desk, billing, and management.

• Participate in staff meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and training.

• Help identify issues with orders, duplicates, or out-of-stock items.

• Ensure patients receive timely fittings, follow-ups, and device adjustments.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• Orthotic Fitter certification (or willingness to obtain within 12 months).

• Experience in O&P, PT/OT, DME, or medical office preferred.

• Knowledge of casting techniques and orthotic device function (training provided).

• Strong communication skills and ability to work with patients of all ages.

• Comfortable standing for long periods and lifting up to 30 lbs.

• Detail-oriented, organized, and able to follow clinical instructions accurately.

Salary or Hourly Rate

$22.00 per hour
